The Wellington Hospital Board today adopted a. committee report wherein the following recommendations are included:—“That the Government be asked to establish payment upon application of maternity bonus of £2O for each legitimate when the income of the family does not exceed £3OO per annum, and that the scope of the St. Helen’s Maternity Hospitals he extended to persons whose income does not exceed £3OO a year. TJie committee is of the opinion that a. Social Insurance Fund, to which the employee, employer, and Government should contribute would be of mutual assistance tp families during periods of distress arising from .sickness, accident or other causes.” WORKS NOT STOPPING. WLELINGTON, Oct. 29. In connection with the reported stoppage at Chelsea Sugar Works, the President of'the Board of Trade has made representations on the subject to: tlio Prime Minister, asking him to arrange for a supply of coal for the refinery from, the Railway Department’s stocks, in order to avoid, a cessation of operations. Information was received in \\ oiling ton to-night that the work at the refinery will not be suspended. Although the Chelsea Sugar Works will close at midnight, arrangements have been made by tjie Government to supply tlie works with 000 tons of coal immediately. Consequently the works will be running as usual on Monday. MOTOR AND TRAIN COLLIDE. INVERCARGILL, Oct. 29. A motor car collided with the train from Riverton to Invercargill at Wallaeetown level- crossing this evening. Tlie car contained two men, who did not notice the approach of the train, until they were almost on the line. One of the occupants jumped out, but the other, Henry Warden, the driver, remained in the car. and was struck by the engine, sustaining a fracture of the skull. He was removed to tlie .Southland Hospital in a serious condition. LIME WORKS DESTROYED. INVERCARGILL, v-ct. 29. A fire at Lady Barkley, near Winton, early this morning destroyed the lime works together with plant and between 7000 and 8000 bags of lime. The loss is estimated at £3OOO. The insurance was £ISOO in the Queensland office. BLINDED SOLDIERS FUND. WELLINGTON, Oct. 29. The proposed establishment of a blinded'soldiers’ fund of ten thousand pounds was considered by the Wellington War Relief Association to-day when it was decided “that unless all societies agree to do-so, the Wellington War Relief Association should not subscribe to the proposed blinded soldiers’ fund but that funds controlled by the War Funds Council should lie conserved to assist all disabled soldiers if at any time the local society, through lac-k .of funds should be in a position to Help adequately any disabled soldiers.”
