The Design of Westland’s War Memorial.

The above is the design of the Westland War Memorial, which is to be erected in Hokitika. The design is by D. W 7. Custer and Co., Ltd., of Australia, through Mr H. A. Thompson, of Hokitika. The cenotaph is to be erected on Cass Square on the site on which last Anzac Day, Lieutenant S. Frickleton, V.C., laid the foundation stone. The memorial will consist of a marble canopy and pillars, with granite pedestal l within for the record' of the names of the Westland fallen, the list of which contains 175 names. The whole will be reared on a foundation of concrete, built up with three steps. The size of the canopy will be Bft Gin by Bft Gin, and the total height of the memorial 15ft. The granite pedestal will be 9ft high, 3ft by 3ft, polished on four panels, and also with a cap likewise polished l . The pedestal will be of Tilba grey granite. The columns will be of white fluted Corinthian, and the entablature denticular. The frieze will probably include some heraldic, shielding. The main entablature will bear the inscription decided upon to the memory of the fallen:—“We lie dead in many Land's so that you may live here in peace.” The bottom base step will bo lift 6in square, and the design as drafted, should produce a very worthy memorial. The sum of about £250 is required to cover the completed cost of the above Memorial, which is to be unveiled during next year.
