WESTLAND HOSPITALS AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 27th. The Board met at 8.30 p.ni. Present: Messrs R, Wild, (Umirimui), T. It. Cbesterman, G. Davidson, I'. W. Duff and S. P. Evans. The minutes of tile previous meeting were confirmed and correspondence outward approved. MEDI CO° FOB KUMAR A. A deputation from Kunmra Waited (in the Board consisting of Mrs Seebeck, Mrs Passmore, and Messrs J’amment, McGrath, and Millson. It was stated the deputation had tome down to discuss the appointment of a medical officer for Kunmra. Tim following applications were received for the position:— T. Julian, Wellington. H. Greenwood, Captain, late Air Force. D. Gault, F.R.C.S. M.D., Auckland. The deputation after discussion resolved to recommend the appointment of Dr Greenwood. 'Mr'Evans then moved that Dr Greenwood be appointed. Seconded by Mr Chestorman. It was arranged that the duties include, free attendance as required at the Old People’s Home, with a weekly visit to institution, with free attendance to old age pensioners and recipients of charitable aid. Mr Pamment intimated that the first half-yearly instalment of £75 would be paid on Ist November; the deputation guaranteeing payment of the second instalment at the end of six months. Mr Pamment furthered a request for the doctor’s residence at Kumarn. to he handed over to the people of Kumarn. He pointed out that years ago the people subscribed voluntarily, tho funds for the erection of the building. He pointed out that there was ample room in his opinion for all the patients in the main building. Mr Davidson said ho could not see how tho patients could bo taken out of the doctor’s residence without overcrowding the institution. Mr McGrath said the doctor’s residence was not part of the hospital. Mr Millson urged the Board to takr a lenient view as the money was subscribed by the residents beforo the Board took charge and tlm people conconsidered tho Wilding belonged to them. The Chairman said that the matter would receive consideration. He did not think that the Board could grant their request without it being sliowfl that the patieifts could bo treated without inconvenience or nny serious expense. A conference was to he held at Greymouth on Monday when the question of the centralisation of all the old people on tho Coast, and if that proposal came into force there would ho the home and residence both available. He wished to express the Board’s appreciation of tho broad attitude and spirit shown by the membefs of the deputation in the action they had taken in the matter. WESTLAND HOSPITAL. Dr Teichelmann waited on the Board, stating that he had arranged for another medical officer, Dr Broco Baird, to assist him in his medical duties and that he desired leave of absence for six months from attendance at Westland Hospital as be desired to take a rest; that Dr Bruce Baird lie allowed to act in his place. Tho Board resolved to grant the request, members expressing their appreciation of past services of Dr Teiciielmann and also that his services would 'still he available in the district. It was resolved to ask tho Health Department to withdraw Board’s request for a second medical officer for Hokitika. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Minister of Public Health notifying no objection to appointment of modieal officer at Kumara.—Received. From P. Coyle, asking for increase of 2s per ton for cartage of coal.—Received and agreed to. From Sister Dora, Otira, in reference to ordering of goods.—Received. From W. H. Batson, master, at Kumara, report on requirements and conditions at institution.—Received. Requirements asked for to he procured. From Hon C. J. Parr, Minister of Public Health, replying to the Waitaki Board’s protest. Received. From Hon W. F. Massey, promising consideration to request for vesting of mines lease in the Board.—Received. From Minister of Health three letters, T. E. Y. Seddon two telegrams, re supply of 3 bags of sugar for Kumara Home.—Received. The Chairman pointed out that altogether seven letters and telegrams had been sent over a jxaltrv three bags of sugar. He moved that the members of tho staff be notified that the, Board regrets to find that some members of the staff are taking it upon themselves to address Ministers and other persons on matters before they come before tho Board and that they be directed that in future they address their requests to tbq Board. Seconded by Mr Chesterraan and carried. From Otira Committee forwarding voluntarily contributions £6214s 10d.— Received with thariks. From J. Schilling, Wniho Gorge, asking that all the Board’s correspondence be sent through the Committee.—Received. From Probationer Benson, Westland Hospital, forwarding resignation.—Received and accepted. From J. D. Gillies, Resident Engineer, Greymouth, In reference to fees charged by medical officer at Otira for certificates.— The Chairman stated a satisfactory solution had been arranged . From E.. Perliam offering 100 loads, of 2ft firewood, free at tho mill.—Received and offer accepted with thanks. From Ross Committee forwarding £SO contribution towards doctor. —Received. From Dr J. H. nowledging Board’s letter of sympathy. —Received. From J. Stewart, Ivumara, asking for share of tho cheat supply to Old People’s Home. —Received. Mr Davidson moved that no action be taken until the period for which tenders were cull-* ed for find expired. Seconded by Mr Olios term,m and carried. From T. Nolan, ■Mntainui, in reference to tho cost involved through the absence of a district nurse.—Received; the Secretary to reply. From Dr Valentine, stating a meeting of tke West \onst Boards would bo hold at Greyinoutli on Monday to meet the Inspector of Hospitals, and asking for the Board to ho represented.—Received. Tho Chairman and Mr Davidson were appointed to represent the Board. From Mabel M. Baker, offering services as nurse for South West-land.—Re-ceived. It was stated that Nurse Webster had refused to take up tho duties. The action of tho Chairman in appointing Nurse Baker to the position was approved. From Women’s Benevolent Society recommending aid grants and enclosing £l7 10s Ocl proceeds of measurement concert.—Received; recoin mendations approved, with thanks for successful effort. Accounts amounting to £1221 3s 3d were passed for payment. • Tho Finance Committee recommended that tlie application of tho Secretary for mi increase of salary be deferred for a. month to enable tho new Bom d to deal with.—Received and adopted. The Treasurer reported receipts £2349 4s fid, payments £IO2O 9s Bd, credit balanco £IOO2 17s lOd. Building account credit balance £69 7s 2d.—Received. The House Committee reported on a number of requirements.—Received. The matron desired to acknowledge from Mrs Ha-ckell and Mrs Braddon linen and from Library magazines. Votes of thanks were passed for benefits arranged and it was resolved to publish a. list of the donations received. Tho Board rose at 11 p.m.
