lwe Irish hunger-strikers who are faithful to their cause even unto death, present a fresh phase to the vexed question of Home Rule for Ireland. The victims are of th e Sinn Fein party which is ostensibly out for a republican Ireland. To them no measure of home rule only will be acceptable. They ask for complete autonomy and separation from Britain. This as British statesmen have reiterated is impossible because Ireland adjacent as it is to the United Kingdom could not be left to
her own foreign policy. A Republican Ireland is impossible, but Home Rule for Ireland has been promised and that promise has got to be redeemed. Britain has dallied' over the question for so long that even a. liberal policv of home rule will not be acceptable to a great portion of the people. This fact renders the Irish question more complex than ever. The hunger strikers who are prepared to die for the cause they espouse, take a more sensible course
