Mr Storey, questioned in the Assem--11 bly respecting American loans, said bo would consider the matter if the terms were favourable, but he had no intention of acting at present. A COMPROMISE. SYDNEY, Oct. 21. Both parties to the municipal strike at Broken Hill compromised on an increase in wages and there was a resumption of work to-day. Mr Cook, referring to the suggested American loan, said it wavs interesting, but lie would like to know the rate of interest and conditions. j MR HUGHES IN REPLY. | (Received This Day at 10.40 a.m.) j MELBOURNE, Oct. 21. j In the House of Representatives, Mr Hughe, replying to Mr Watt said even if he did meddle with Mr Watt’s business, that Avas no reason for rasignjng. He should have completed his task land complained on returning to Australia. No Government could give the authority demanded by Mr Watt. His request involved a principle which abrogated the very basis of responsible government. The matter then dropped. The general impression of the speech is disappointment. It is suggested in some quarters that the resignation arose through the 'clashing of two strongly egotistic personalities. COUNTRY PRES® CONFERENCE. SYDNEY, October 21. The Country Press Conference affirmed the desirableness of manufacturing newsprint in Australia and resolved to do all in its poiver to assist.
