J they stole £4 belonging to Harry Hays, j part owner of the tote. Evidence was that Quinn was a- ticket seller at a 10/- • window, and North was stamper f-r j Quinn. On the day in question, Quinn was asked if his cash was correct rrcl lleplied “Yes”i. He denied having given men no change from a £5 note tendered in payment for 'two 10/- tickets. North was sitting close to Quinn when the latter was questioned, but did not speak. Detective Sergt. Ward gave evidence of having obtained two 10/- tickets from North and having tendered a five pound note he waited for the change and none was tendered. Witness then walked away. The trap was set for Quinn owing to complaints. Quinn subsequently stated that the person who tendered the fiver walked away without the change. Accused reserved ther defence and were committed for trial. Bail in one surety of £25 e a ch. A SAD END. PALMERSTON N., Oct. 19. Arthur Joseph Best, a returned soldier, 35 years of age, and Mnnawatu exrepresentative footballer, shot himself at his brother’s home at Kniranga this morning. Deceased bad just purchased a farm at Ash-hurst and was tq be married to-morrow. During the Gallipoli campaign he was seriously wounded in the head and body. Prior to his suicide deceased was in his usual health and spirits.
