AN OBELISK.
TO TOWER ABOVE THE DARDANELLES. I PERMANENT MEMORIAL. It is reported that the Gallipoli War Memorial Committee has in view the erection of a memorial obelisk on an 'appropriate and elevated site at Cape Tekkc Burnu, on the south-western portion of the peninsula. The advantage of this site, which is strongly recommended by the hydrographer-general to the Admiralty, is that the memorial will stand on high ground, and will be visible to ships entering the. Dardanelles. Approval has been given to a design for a white marble obelisk, 67 feet high ; and the site selected for it is on a cliff 134 feet above sea level. One of its three sides will probably face the south, so that when the sun shines its rays will, at all parts of the day, be reflected from the white-marble. It is proposed to record the names of the divisions and ships in carved stone on the base of the obelisk.
