Mi Couison moved that support he given to the letter. —Seconded by the Mayor. Mr Warren supported, considering if the Government did hot nibve thfe people would have to take matters Ih their own hands. The Mayor replied that we put too much faith in what Governments can do, that if they took matters ,in their own hands it would end ih 'chaos. The motion whs agreed to. From Municipal Association, forwarding result of test case.—Received. Froin Captain Stediilan, Greymouth, forwarding list of war trophies available for the West Coast.—Received; referred to the Mayor, Messrs King and Parkhill to attend to. From Dunedin City Council, in reference to borrowing by local bodies, hiul forwarding proposals approved by Council and Ota go Harbor Bo;lrd.-Hte-eeived. From Westlahd Chamber of Commerce, forwarding copy Of correspondence Urging Government be asked to support the carrying out of Hiley scheme of improvements at Lyttelton. —Received. From Westland Charitable Aid Board notifying Borough was entitled to two representatives on the Board. —Received.
From" Westlahd Chamber of Commerce, askiiig for support of Council to proposal of Ml - W. J. Butler for improvement of Cass Square by providing swings etc; and also for provision of suitable hot water supply.—Received. Mr Wood moved that the Council take action as proposed and carry out the Work. He understood a '“substantial donation by Mr Butler was available. — Seconded by Mr Couison who was distinctly in favor of the proposal. Mr King supported, considering something (should at once be carried out to improve Cass Square.—Referred to Reserves Committee to confer with Mr Butler as to the best means of carrying out his Suggestions. From Hokitika Fire Brigade, complaining of stand pipe opposite Bed Lion hotel being blocked, and asking for attention.—Received; to be attended to. at once. From J. Mclntyre (Sexton) asking for annual holiday.—Received; request granted. . ■ ’ From Treasurer, reporting receipts £l7O 17s lOd, payments £127 8s 6d, debit balance £426 10s. —Received. Account's amounting to £5.38 8s Oil were passed for payment. The Finance Committee also recommended that the two day laborers Wages be increased by £1 per hiohth. —Received .and adopted. OVERSEER’S REPORT. I have the honour to report on work done during the past month as follows: . - . ~ The weather conditions during tne past month were very favourable for outside work, thereby enabling the construction of the Halt Street drain to be proceeded with. For the month just ended two chains of this work were completed. Fitrtierbert Street.—We had the gravel drays on for a few days repairing this street between iVeld Street and the north boundary road. The drain in Hampden Street at the intersection With the Sewell Street drain collapsed. The Wood Work Was taken out and replaced With 15 inch pipes. . A number of leaks in the water main Were attended to during the month. The/Usual maintenance Works Were also atteded to during tile month. Hampden Street. —This road requires a little attention at preseht and I think it Would be advisable on account of the heavy traffic to have repairs affected as soon ns possible. —Received. From Manager of Abattoirs (Mr J. Jarman) reported during Sept, there were examined 16 cows, 75 bullocks, 260 sheep, 11 pigs, 4 calves. Condemned 1 cow, 2 bullocks, 2 pigs, Fees for period £57 16s Id.—Received. Mr McGregor referred to the waiVtoU act of the pulling out of the tree planted by the Prince of Wales, stigmatising the act as one of Wantonhess, and Urged the Council to offer a substantial reward for the conviction of the offenders. He moved that a reward of £2O be offered for the conviction of whoever was responsible. Mr CoUlsoil seconded. Mr Warren supported, considering tlio act a despicable one. The motion Was agreed to. The Council rose at 9p.m.
