COOK ISLANDS

(Our Parliamentary Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 5. The External Affairs Amendment Bill was passed in the House after considerable debate. Parliament last year placed all • Island dependencies includin' Samoa, and Cook islands under the control of the Minister for External Affairs. The Bill restores Cock Island to the control of the Minister representing the native race in the ' Cabinet. This Minister is Dr Pom a re, who happens to have Cook Island blood in Ins veins. Some members protested that the change was retrograde, and that all the islands ought to be under one Council in order that trade might he developed in a comprehensive "’ay, and duplication of effort avoided. A good deal was said about the possibilities of trade, and Mr Massey assured the House that future generations would be very glad that the Dominion bad not shirked its duty of assisting in the control of the Pacific Islands. Cook Islands were legally part of New Zealand, and were in a different status from Samoa which was governed under a mandate.
