Mr Hunter presiding over the Queensland church meeting, eulogised the Archbishop of Brisbane’s broad mindedness and tolerance. No church in Queensland had done christianising more worthily than the Anglican. He advocated an extension of church work in the homes of the people and on the- streets, to counteract the Bolsheviks who quoted tho expulsion of money changers from the temple, as justifying the confiscation of property.. Ho regretted the war had undermined the people in regard to the rights of life and property'. The Archbishop of Brisbane declared the national church was becoming independent of the mother church. Many dioceses were already fully staffed, a few being native bom. The term of 'Empire was obsolete and should, be superseded by the British Commonwealth. Qualities of independence and loyalty to principles, and a sense of public duty provided splendid material for nationhood. If ever a fight took place ho would sooner depend on an Australian than any other man in the World. TO MEET THE PRINCE. 'LONDON, 'October 4. Sir Auckland Geddes accompanied the delegates to the tercentenary' celebrations of the landing of the pilgrims to Mount Vernon. The guests included the Secretary of the Navy, Mr J. Daniels. A wreath was placed on Washington's tomb. To a declaration by Mi Daniels to the effect that the “Magnr Cliarta of Runnymede belongs no less to England than to America,” Sii Auckland Geddes replied: “Just a? truly as George Washington belongs tc England. This shows we recall the mistakes made by the earlier generations of rulers of Great Britain, ant realise the lessons that have since madj possible the growth and prosperity of the British Empire.” FRENCH TRADE CONGRESS. Confirming the recent constitutionalist decision of the General Confedeiation of Labour, the French Trade Union Congress at Orleans refused, by 1479 votes to 646, to have anything to do with Lenin’s Internationale. Tile Board of Aldermen granted the .Police Commissioner Enright, a contingent fund of 200,000 dollars, with which to investigate radical activities, conduct secret service work and pursue radicals throughout the nation, independently of New York city’s police force and the Federal authorities. British, French and Italian delegateson the Board for Administration o! the Ottoman public debt will assume control of Turkey’s finances from to morrow. BRITISH COAL CRISIS. LONDON, October 5. Seven thousand coal miners are now striking in Wales against the acceptance of the owners’ terms for a stipulated output before a rise in pay. Thjree thousand more in Scotland are striking likewise, and more miners also in other districts. Their Executives are advising the rejection of the owners’ terms. BRITISH TRADE SLUMP.
