ANOTHER HOLD-UP

WATERSIDE WORK STANDSTILL

[PEK PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT.)

WELINOTON, Sept 29.

A complete deadlock has arisen on the water front as a result of a dispute between shipping companies and water side workers. Yesterday morning there was a brief shower of rain and a gang of about forty men employed in unloading the Calm took a ballot under the waterside workers agreement, and decided to cease work. Instead'of being allowed to stand by, the men were dismissed at eleven a.m. They claimed payment for the hour to noon and as this was not agreed to by the shipping companies, they declined to accept employment on the Calm, when another made at one o’clock. The Companies, on the other hand, have decided that until the Calm is manned, no fresh labour shall be engaged. Two calls for the Calm were made this morning and there was no response from the watersidors. 411 ships arriving in port since noon yesterday, twelve in number, including p coal boat, are idle to-day.
