The kicking competition among members of the Diggers Football Club, for two gold medals presented by the President (Mr D. J. Evans) for place and drop kicking respectively, took place on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon. Ten members competed, but the exhibition was a poor one.
In the place kicking contest the winner was Mr Garnet Michel with 12 points, T. Carley and B. Dowell each 9 points, H. The tie was attempted to be decided during the interval of the school game without result, each man (Dowell anl .Muir) kicking a goal with their last attempt. After the schools game was over, the two men made an effort to -ecide the tie but their kicking was so poor that neither man could pilot the ball truly, and after a quarter of an hour the referees decided to declare the contest a draw, and refer decision as to future action to the donor.
The winner of the place kicking contest was the only one to convert all the place kicks.
At the conclusion of the main contest cheers were heartily given for the winners and the donor of the medals.
j SCHOOLS MATCH J . | REEFTON V. HOKITIKA. | A team from Reefton District High ! School met the Hokitika High School : team on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon. The weather and ground conditions were perfect, except for a fairly strong south-westerly breeze, which aided the defenders of the southern goal. The game was not of the quality of previous contests this year by the local school. The visitors were clearly overmatched early in the game, but the local team gave a very poor display o; ■handling, while there was a screw loose in much of the work of the outer fiveeighth, which spoilt the back - play on .many occasions. Now and then there were (hushes of good combined play, from which on a couple of occasions good tries resulted. The visitors though getting the ball fairly often in the scrum were hadlv beaten in the loose forward work, while their backs did not get properly going, though one or two of the hacks made good individual runs :.t times. The kicking by both sides was good, while Wogan gave an excellent display of place kicking, converting three* tries out of five and makug excellent long range attempts with the others. Aitken potted a very fine goal, in the closing stages of the game, which resulted in a win for Hokitika by 25 points to nil. The score was made up of five tries scored by Wogan (2), Wells (2), O’Neill (1), three being converted by Wogan. ami a potted goal by Aitken. Mr L. Hills had control of the game. There was only a fair attendance present, the gate receipts totalling £8 10s.
