RAILWAY AND EXPENDITURE FIGURES,
WELLINGTON, Sept 23
In the Railway Working Account the revenue for the period from April Ist to August 21st ; shows a total of £2,423,U33, as compared with £2,026,443 for the corresponding period of last year. The North Island lines contributed £1,405,190, as against £1,151,193 and the South Island lines £1,017,848, compared with £875,249. , The expenditure for the period totalled £2,031,597, or 85 per cent, of the revenue, as compared with £1,383,894, or 68.27 per cent, of the revenue in the corresponding period last year. The expenditure on the North Island -lines totalled £1,110,830, or 79.05 per cent, of the revenue, ns compared with £755 704, or 65.65 per cent, in the same period of last year, and the expenditure on the South Island lines amounted to £920,776, or 90.46 per cent., against £627,690, or 71.72 per cent. The traffic returns show that there was an increase of 289,007 in the number of live stock carried, and an increase of 330,252 tons in the quantity of goods carried. The total number of tickets issued was 5,626,890, an increase of 1,317,510, and*of season tickets there,was an increase of 31,211.
