PRINCE IN WEST INDIES

ST. GEORGE (Grenada), Sept 25

The Prince of Wales arrived in the Renown at Grenada, the most picturesque of all the West Indian islands today. and was welcomed by the Governor (Sir George Haddon-Smith), the. Executive of the Legislative Council, and heads of churches. J.he Prince visited Lako Grand Etang, at 2000 feet altitude, which was formerly the scene of fearsome negro sacrificial celebrations. It also was the scene of a massacre of British inhabitants by negro felons and a band of insurrectionists in 1885. It is now under British rule. The whole island enjoys peace and prosperity. At the same time the negro population now exhioits some unrest. They are conforming to the world-wide manifestations of discontent among the workers. , The Prince holds a reception aboard the Renown to-night, and sails at daybreak for St Lucia.

WILSON AND SHIPPING. WASHINGTON, September 24. The State Department has announced .that President Wilson does not intend to obey the Merchant Marine Act, recently passed by Congress. The Act leq„ires the President to inform the Powers with whom the United 'States has commercial treaties that America elects to terminate those sections restricting her from granting special import tariff and transportation rates on imports carried in American vessels. The announcement declares such a termination would be a violation of those] treaties (which number 32) and the United States is in honour bound to carry out.

PRICE OF COMMODITIES. NEW YORK, September 25

Reports from all parts of thetountrv indicate a drastic reduction in prices of all kinds of commodities, varying from lumber and food to automobiles end from ten to fifty points. Publicists predict that a downward movement all along the line will continue for some time.

It is thought that the prices of newsprint paper will reach the highest level some time in February and then decline.
