Thoughts For The Times.
"State Must Economise.”
“A perusal of the Financial Statement placed before Parliament by the Minister for Finance, the Hon W, F. Massey, makes one feel almost pessimistic with regard to the country’s ability to make ends meet,” says the “Farmer’s Union Advocate.” “The calls upon the public purse are so enormous that should any slump in the prices of our produce takes place, we are almost certain to find ourselves on tlio wrong side of the ledger. It is obvious that the time is rapidly approaching when the State must seriously consider the question of economy. It is not much use preaching economy to the ordinary citizen if the Government does not set the example. Mr Massey sees no immediate hope of a. reduction of taxation, and it certainly looks as though the burden was going to be greater ratherJtlian less. ”
