LOAN PROPOSALS CARRIED. WELLINGTON, Sept. 15,

The Wellington ratepayers to-day voted in favour of the City Council’s loan proposals, aggregating one million seven hundred thousand pounds. There were nine separate proposals, covering water supply, street works, tramway extension, baths, general improvements, a new tunnel through Mt. Victoria, and fire protection equipment. All were carried by, roughly, a majority of three to two. Out of some twenty-one thousand ratepayers on the roll, only about five thousand voted. SCHOOL OF FORESTRY. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 15. At a conference of representatives of local bodies and other organisations held to-niglit the following motion was carried:—“That in the opinion of this conference of the representatives of the local bodies, and industrial, conimercial, and farming interests of Canterbury, tlie Government should give early effect to the recommendation of the Director of Forestry that a School of Forestry should be established in connection with Canterbury University College. It was further decided that a representative deputation wait upon Mr Massey in Wellington to urge the views of the people of Canterbury in the matter. SMALLPOX AT ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON, Sept. 15.

Five cases of smallpox of the American tyre are reported at Hiritingdoh, near Ashburton. The infection has been traced from Otago through a schoolmaster. Three cases are school children. Most of 40 contracts are also children. The district health officer, who investigated to-day, says it is in a vefj' m?ld form, but the strictest precautions are being taken, including vaccination of the contacts. RETURNED SOLDIER'S QUARREL WANGANUI, Sept. 15. A split has occurred in the ranks of the Wanganui Returned Soldiers’ Association. At a meeting to-niglit; a vote of “no confidence” was passed on the members of the committee for writing to the Wanganui Racing Club and stating that the practice on the part of the Club of issuing free tickets to race meetings was no longer desired.The meeting was stormy and on the vote being carried, the President and other members of the Executive resigned.
