PRINCE AT COLON. (Received This Day at 8.40 a.m.) COLON, Sept. 14,
H.M.S. Renown passed through the Canal to-day, making a fast trip of seven hours. She traversed Gatun Lake at a speed of eighteen knots. Culebra Cut has been much deepened since the Renown’s outward voyage, and there is now an ample margin of depth,\in the event of a landslide. The Prince disembarked at Gatun, accompanied by his staff, and travelled by special train to Fort De Lessops where arrangements had been made for a tarpon fishing trip. The party were entertained at dinlier in ; the evening. The Renown leaves for Kingstown (Jamaica) at daybreak to-morrow.
MEAT SHORTAGE. (Received This Day at 8.40 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 13. Speaking at the annual convention of " the institute of American meat packers held at Atlantic] City, it was pointed out that the big packers of United States were facing a serious meat shortage due to a growing disinclination of farmers to raise cattle, owing •Cito the high costs. The institute hopes to devise means of remedying the short : age. MAINE'ELECTIONS. (Received This Day at 8.40 1 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 13. The State elections in Maine show a Republican majority approximately 40,000. Republican leaders claim that Maine jias repudiated the Wilson administration and Jibe League pf Natjuns. Maine ig the oply State in the pnjon, whose elections occur- ip September instead of November and it had become an axiom tliat other votes always follows Maine’s vote, although 1912 and 1916 were exceptions, the State voting Republican. The National, Democratic and Republican leaders attach grpat importance tp Maine results as it is said a greater number of women who votp for the first ie \ vere Republican^.
