FOOTBALL

Considerable interest is being shown in the football match' to take place on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon next between teams representing Hokitika Fire Brigade and a combination of the Excelsior, Kiwi and Diggers Clubs. The match will be a benefit for the Westland Hospital building fund. Apart from this, however, the match should be an interesting one, as the Fire, Brigade team is a very strong one that promises to give their opponents a real good go. It includes some veterans who feel capable of making a good showing. The teams are:—Fire Brig vie. Woolhouse, E. Heenan, Dowell, Williams, Ross, Duneraft, P. Cufbush, Wil son, Dovaney, Davidson, W. Breeze, J. Cutbusli, H. Thompson, Wallace, W. Thompson. Combined Hokitika team.— Carley, Nancekivell, Kearns, Askew, N. M ilson, E. Breeze, G. Aitken, Powley. Bethune Kortegast, Irving, Wells, Hannah, Wogan and Ma’under. Emergencies, forwards: Brown and Shannon; backs: Chetwynd and Jones.

SOUTHERN DIVISION. A meeting of the Southern Division was held hist evening, Present—Messrs A. H. Lawn (Chair.), W. A, Berry, H. Barker, T. Kerr, A. Cutbusli, D. T Gillooly, V. W. M. Bonar, A. and D. Dowell, and E. W. Heennn (Secretary). The minutes were, read and columned and correspondence was read and received. A subscription list in aid of West Coast tour was received from the West Coast Rugby Union and also proposed alteration to rules. It was resolved that the Southern Division had no funds to vote towards expenses of the Marlborough tour, but would post the subscription list. ' The following Ross men’s cases V’ere rtpalt with—W. Inglis, T. Jones, Can ningliam and Rochford. Tlie Ross captain’s evidence liras 1 submitted, also that of Mr Conning (referee) and some spectators. Ihe four men did not appear. Considerable discussion continued on the case and eventually a motion was moved and" seconded that the four men be disqualified for a period of two years. An amendment was put and lost that, the men bo disqualified for one year. The motion was then put and carried bv 8 to 3, that T. Jones, W. Inglis, Cunningham, and Rochford be disqualified for two years.- These penalties are to he submitted to West Coast Rugby Union for confirmation.

The Union expressed its thanks ro Captain .Scott, and other members oi the Ross team, also to Mr Conning for his prompt action. It was resolved to hold a presentation Ball on Wednesday, September 22nd., and to present the Cup-to the Diggers on that night. The prices to be as follows—Gents 2/-; Ladies 1/-. It was resolved to ask the Kiivi Club t’o loan the Executive their jerseys for the representative team. The following referees were appointed : —Fire Brigade v. Representatives on Saturday—Mr Gillooly at 3 p.m. Curtain raiser, Schools match—Grey v. Hokitika on Saturday at 1.30 p.m. Mr Dee.

The meriting terminated with the usual vote of thanks to the chair.
