JOTTINGS FROM THE LOBBY
(Our Parliamentary Correspondent.) j | , THIS WEEK’S WORK. I WELLINGTON, Sept. 13. j Hon AV. F. Massey is expected to' move the second reading of the Land , and Income Tax Bill this week. The Bill is not an easy one to understand in all its hearings, and the Prime Minister has promised to provide members with an official explanation of the clauses, but this explanation is not likely to be ready in time! for the second reading speeches. The order paper contains more work at present than at any other stage of the session. The Marriage Amendment
Bill is awaiting consideration of the new clause added by the Legislative Council. Some discussion on, this subject may be expected. The Military Service Amendment Bill and Master and Apprentices’ Amendment Bill are regarded with great displeasure by the Labour Party and are to be resisted in committee. The Immigration Restriction Bill lias not yet received its second reading, which will be taken this week. Then there is the Licensing Amendment Bill dealing with the transfer of licenses. Mr McCallum and Mr Lysnar are both, threatening to move an amendment opening up the general
licensing question when this Bill reaches committee. If they do the Bill may be lost altogether. The Civil List Bill, dealing with mems salaries is waiting the committee stage. It will not be reached until the recently appointed Committee of members has reported upon it. The Standard Time Bill proposing to advance the clock half an hour, has been on the order paper'since early in the session. Members are predicting that it will not make farther progress. Another bill that is awaiting its second reading is Mr Hunter’s Gaming Amendment, proposing to increase the number of totalisator permits in favour of country districts. Mr Hunter prob-
ably could get a majority to support his . bill, if he could reach a division, but the opposition to this bill will be strong enough to occupy much time, and Go vernment may not be willing to provide the time now that the busy end of the sessin has been reached. The Railways Statement is to come down this week, and the Railway estimates will be- taken on Friday night next. Government hope to complete the Estimates on that night.
