BACKBLOCK SCHOOLS
INCREASED CAPITATION GRANT
(Our Parliamentary Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, Ibis Day
‘‘l recognise it is the 'duty of the Government to deal not merely justly, but Also generously with children of backblocks” read the Minister for Education, Hoh Parr, in the House early tiiis moriiing. “I think there is room for improvement. It is true that capitation grants for aided schools in backblocks have been increased from £6 to £l2 per child. The payment of £l2 is now made for each child in the house-hold schools in the backbloeks, but I am hot satisfied even- yet that justice is being done. I think that the grant will have to be further increased, in order that, they shall be able to get a good class of teachers for these schools. “The Minister added that he intended after the session to visit, the country districts and see some Of tile backbloeks schools for himself. He ‘would be able in that way to get a knowledge of tlie difficulties that required to be overcome. He would inquire then regarding the suggestion made by Mr Hunter (Waipdwa) that acconimod'atioh slioiild be found at country schools for horses ,and ponies of children who required to_ ride to school.
