The House met at 2.30 p.m
The whole of the afternoon sitting was occupied with tliel transaction of formal business.
'At 7.30 p.m,, the Land and Income Assessment Bill was introduced by administrator’s message. Mr Massey briefly explained its chief- features, which lie said were intended not so much to increase revenue as to remove anomalies in the present law. The Bill was read first time.
Mr Massey then moved the second reading of the Land and Income Tax (annual) Bill, fixing the rate of land and Income Tax for the present year. Mr Veitch moved that Bill he referred back to Government with a recommendation that Customs duties bo taken off the necessaries of life, and that-an increase be made in higher grades of land tax on larger incomes and on death duties. The debate on this amendment lasted till 11.35, when on division the amendment was I'ost by 32 to 16. The Bill was then read a* second time and on the Premier’s motion was passed through all remaining stages, as it was . urgently needed by the Department. The Rouse rose at. 12.22 a.m.
