Mr f. W. Furkett has been appointed Engineer-in-Chjef and Under-Secre-tary of the Public Works Department. Mr C. J, McKenzie has been appointed Inspecting Engineer for Wellington, and Mr J. T, Mair School Architect of the Education Department. A serious accident befell the Rev. G. W. H. Harding at Prebbleton on Sunda’ydny evening. The motor-car which lie was driving collided with another motor, find Mr Harding suffered a fractured thigh and injuries to the head. He was immediately conveyed tp the Christchurch Hospital. Nexf day lie- recovered consciousness, and is npw progressing. A rather nasty, and at the same time painful accident happened on Monday, says the Grey “Star,” to Mr “Bob” Wilson, w bo was working in a cutting, on the' new railway line to the Seven Mile. It appears that ho was picking the side of the cutting .with the sun beaming on his face, and there was a ■ shovel lying on the side of the cutting, | ' and as Wilson did not notice it he struck the shovel causing the blade to fly up , and strike him a severe blow on the forehead inflicting a deep and nasty j gash, causing fhq sufferer to lose a considerable quantity of blood. Dr Cotter , put several stiches in and made the suf-, ferer as comfortable as possible. ) “While steaming from Suva for Auck land,” said Mr A. Washer, to a “Herald” reporter, “the vessel was suddenly brought to a standstill at 2 o’clock one morning. I went out on dook to see what was the matter, and saw a Ji„ht, apparently floating on the water and coming towards us from a neajrby Island. In time iwo natives swam, alongside the vessol, one towing a floating Hriit and the other a tn box winch contained the mail. The box was taken on board the Mokoia, the island, b niil fl was attached and lowered, and -' the swimmers thereupon set out for the . * island through the shark-infested sea. This is the customary method of work- | ing the mails at this island.”
