MeSWEENEY’S FRIENDS. /. NEW YORK, Sept. -3

The Mayor of New York, Mr Hylan, has just cabled to Lloyd George a protest against the treatment of Mayor McSweeney. Mr Hylan cables:—“As Mayor of the largest city in the United States, and speaking for all its citizens, I wish respectfully to urge you to not disgrace our war aims by any further imprisonment of Mr McSweeney, whose heroic fortitude In representing, even unto death, the opinions of the citizens of Cork who elected him has won admiration universally.” LONDON, Sept. 3. The Labour Leader, Mr Adamson, and the Trades’ Union leaders have appealed again to the Government to release Mayor McSweeney. They urge it as being an act of humanity,'and also out of political wisdom, they point out the death of Mr McSweeney would cause a ■terrible explosion of anger. It wpuld lead to further bloodshed in Ireland.

(Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 5. The Dean Chapter of Worcester petitioned the King on behalf of McSweeney. DR. MANNIX. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) v NEW YORK, September 3. It is believed Dr Mannix is carrying on negotiations with the British Government through an eminent British ecclesiastic for permission to go to Ireland and act as peacemaker. Dr Mannix now points out that ,he cannot see succour for” Ireland outside of the Empire, but he insists upon the fullest self Government within tlie Empire. He is said to be willing to give' a pledge to work to this end if allowed to go to Ireland, ■ which he is anxious to visit before obeying the summons to Rome.
