A SHIPPING MISHAP. WHAICATANE, Aug. 27. The Tasman, a passenger steamer, after leaving Whakatane early this morning, lost her rudder and Is now proceeding to Taurnnga, whence a tug is coming to meet her.
A NEW HOSPITAL. WHAKATANE, Aug. 27 Tile Bay of Plenty Hospital Board has instructed its architect to proceed immediately with the erection of an up-to-date hospital at AVhakatane, as approved by the Minister. The structure will be built by day labour at a cost of £15,000 or £20,000.
COAL SUPPLIES. WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. AA’et weather is interfering with the discharge of coal-laden vessels in port. AA’ork is only being carried on between showers, and consequently the output is not very large. The difference between tlie Gas Company and its stokers lias been adjusted, and the gas will be turned on early to-morrow morning.
A STABBING AFFRAY. WELLINGTON, Aug. 28. A message received by the police, from Alartiuborougli, states during a quarrel between two men, David Carlston stepped in to stop them, and was stabbed between the ribsr Carlston was removed to the hospital in a serious condition. The alleged assailant was arrested. r.V)AL INCREASE. W ELLINGTON, Aug. 28. With the sanction of the Board of Trade there has been an increase of Is per ton at the pit mouth in the price of coal produced in northern mines. The increase talced effect from Sept. 1, and applies to all grades, including household coal. It is unlikely that the cost to the domestic consumer will be increased. The least possible increase would be one penny per ewt, and dealers may decide not to pass on the increase. There has been an increase in the cost of Westpdrt coal, but it does not apply to household coal.
A SERIOUS CHARGE. DUNEDIN, August 27. At the Police Court to-day Matthew Bradley, City CouneilHor aged 62 years, was charged with carnally knowing a girl under the age of 16 years. Chief Detective Bishop, who prosecuted, suggested that the Court, which wa.s crowd ed, should be cleared as “the details of the case, were pretty bad.” Magistrate Batholomew then ordered th<- Court to be cleared and forba/le tlie publication of tlie details 0 f the evidence. The accused, who reserved liis defence, was committed for trial, bail being allowed.
SCHOOL OF MINES. WESTPORT, August 27. Out of seven applicants, Mr J. F. MePadden, Director to the Reefton School of Mines, was this evening appointed Director of the Westport School cf Mines.
