‘ SHOP ASSISTANTS REQUESTS. 1 i WELLINGTON, August 26. . ! Revision of the Shops and Officers } Act was sought by a deputation representing the shop assistants organisations I throughout the Dominion, which inter--1 viewed the Minister of Labour to-day. They asked for a- universay Saturday half holiday, and legislative authority i for the Arbitration Court to fix shop [ hours. In reply, Sir W. Herries pro i mised to submit the deputation’s views to the Government. He said if lie could be certain that the Saturday half , holide.v, was a popular proposal in the country, and that people wanted it, he would be glad to bring it forward. Mr Veitch had made a proposal that a Commission should be stt up to enquire into the labour laws of the Dominion, but if such an inquiry were to be taken now, it would mean that a lot of amendments necessary at the moment would be set aside until next session Some legislation would be brought Sown during the present session. Whether the amendments to the law would go as far as the Labour members wished, he could not say, but ho hoped they would be passed. All the legislation would come before Labour Bills Committee, and on that Committee the Labour members would have an opportunity of suggesting amendments. He i asked that they should not try to join on to his Bills amendments that members of their party had introduced as ; separate Bills during the session. ( —HIT I T
