WAIHO GORGE, Aug. 20

The Canterbury delegates are having ft continuance of beautiful weather for the southern trip. The impression of I the earlier stages of th e Westland tour : were enhanced manifold yesterday by what they saw. All were surprised, and speak enthusiastically of the dis i triet’s prospects. A good meeting was , held last night regarding requirements ’ and the delegates recognised the prime . importance of bridges and the local | wants mentioned. They visited the ■ Glacier in the forenoon to-day, and | then left for Wataroa and Hari Hari, the visit being pronounced a great success from every point of view, and the southern district has never had a better advertisement. YESTERDAY’S PROGRESS. RAILWAY EXTENSION. AN 1 , IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT. (By Telegraph.—Special to Guardian.) HARI HARI, Aug. 21. Tlie Canterbury visitors spent an interesting and instructive day yesterday visiting different settlements, and met the settlers, Darning their requirements. They saw mobs of cattle and sheep proceeding to market. Tlie stock was of fine quality and impressed the visitors with the pastoral qualities of the district.. A good meeting'was held last night. Mr W. J. Butler, on behalf of Stuart and Chapman, Ltd., made an important statement regarding railway communication south of Ross to the effect that if the Government were not proceeding with the extension, private enterprise would undertake the proposition 'and carry goods for settlers. Mr Butler gave some indication also of the freights the Government would derive from timber hauling, which impressed the visitors with the assured financial success of the railway extension.
