I). Bell moved that they be not insisted on. The Bills original purpose was to kill the bookmaker and though quite properly moved, tho Council’s amendments were not material. i Hon'Triggs maintained that the Bill without tho Council’s amendments would not kill the bookmaker, but he was prepared to take half a loaf. Hon Barr expressed disapproval, hut said ho realised in the atmosphere of the Council. It would be usless to press amendments. Wanganui Borough Council Empowering and Acquisition Bill was read a first time. Statutes Repeal and Expiring Laws Amendment and Continuance Bill was road a second time pro forma and referred to the Statutes Revision Committee. Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Amendment was read a first time. The Council rose at 2.55 p.m.

THE HOUSE.

The House met at 2.30 p.m

After disposing of routine business, tho House went into committee of supply to consider the estimates of expenditure for tho current year. The following votes were passed:—Justice Department £406,729, Internal Affairs, £438,784, Tourist Department £76,570. Tlie House rose at 12.15 a.m.
