His proposed course is west of Wrangel Island, towards tho Siberian Islands, keeping in open water until a favourable place Js found to strike di-. rectly north, probably in the vicinity of tho foundering of the Jeannette. He hopes to gain two years by tbis means. The Jeannette was lost in drifting from Wrangel to Jeannette Island.
TO CLIMB AIT. EVEREST. LONDON, August 10. A sub-committee of the Royal Geographical Society is considering details of the proposed expedition to attempt to scaie Mount Everest, via Tibet. It is anticipated to entail enormous difficulties, and will take a couple of years. NEW STATUES. LONDON, August 8. The London corporation decided on j the abolition of the famous kingly statues of George 111 in Pall Alall, and William IV, and proposes to erect new statues of Edward VII in Trafalgar I Suqare, Lord Kitchener and Roberts at j tho War Office, and Admiral Fisher at I the Admiralty. Th e Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, after careful inquiry into the appeal of Yeats, is of opinion that a prima facia case of grave injustice was established. The college earnestly requests the New Zealand Government to fully and impartially investigate -.lie circumstances. A copy of the finding was sent to the High Commissi iinr Lord Milner iater replied that he bad no power to give any direction, the case being one entirely for the New Zealand Government.
EXODUS FROM INDIA. DELHI, August 9,
Persistent reports aro current of an exodus of emigrants from the frontier provinces to Afghanistan, causing tho latter much worry. Certain villages in the vicinity of Peshawar have (.migrated en .bloc, and Afghan reports state they are feeding large numbers of travellers which is proving a serious matter- There is good reason to believe the authorities at Kabul are growing anxious and are attempting to stop the movement which is largely due to preaching priests in India.
