FOOTBALL.
The Southern Division senior cup competition was advanced a further stage on Saturday when further games of the second round were played. I lie weather was not of too favourable a nature a light rain falling at intervals, during the afternoon, and making tin; grounds wet and slippery. The results were:— Kumara 3 v. Excelsiors 3. Diggers 8 v. Kiwis 3. Ross 3, v. Kokatahi 0. The Exceisior-Kulnlira match proved an unexpected result. Excelsiors owing to the epidemic striking a number of players had to put in a number oi emergencies, blit they played up veil and an even go resulted in a draw, 3 points each.
The Kiwi-Diggers game followed, and the former held the advantage scoring a try in the early stages of the game. It was not until the last five minutes that the Diggers came with a rush Miclicl scoring and almost immediately afterwards Carley got over again, and the try being converted, Diggers won by 8 points to 3. Scotty Wright had the misfortune to break the small bone ol bis foot during the play. The Kiwi Football Club hold a practice to-morrow evening in the Supreme Hall Sharp. The match between the South Island Country Team and Hawke’s Bay was played to-day in the presence, ot ..'.out 4l)0t) spectators. Tile visitors u n by 12 points to 0. For the wimicts tries were scored by Nelson (2) and Fitzgerald. Nelson also kicked a penalty goal. Tries were scored for the losers by lvivell and Thomas. The place kicking on both sides was poor* Mr \\ Illinois was referee.
CANTERBURY V. OTAGO. DUNEDIN, Aug 7. The lntcrproviiicial football match between Canterbury aud Otago was played at Carisbrook to-day, during a drizzling rain and on a wet ground, which soon made the ball greasy and exceedingly difficult to handle. Tries were scored by Wilson, who followed up fast; and by McLeod, who got oyer from a good pieco of passing. On t..e day’s play there were not 9 points difference between the teams, but under the existing conditions it mig.it have been anybody’s game. The final scores were Canterbury 9, Otago nil.
RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND, Aug 7. The Ranfurly Shield match, Wellington v. Auckland, was played to-day in the presence ol about 15,000 spectators. Wellington, who were the holders of the trophy, retained the Shield, defeating the home team by 23 points to 20, after an interesting game. At half time the scute was 8 to 3 in Auckland’s favour, but in the second spell Wellington forged ahead.
• NEW ZEALAND WINS AGAIN. SYDNEY, Aug 8. The final New Zealand v. New South Wales match excited little interest, there being only a handful of spectators. During the second tepm Steel dislocated 'his arm and was taken to the hospital. New South Wales scored first. Humphreys picking up in the loose and transferring to Mingay who scored and converted. Roberts and Storey, combining splendidly, carried play to the New South Wales line, ti e former crossing, .though tackled. 1 goal resulted. Soon after Tilyard pa ed to -Storey, who scored easily. Roberts failed at goal. A fine effort IWilson, in punting down the field an. regaining, resulted in another try After tile ball had been handled b; Badely, Cairrol and Steel, the last mentioned crossed over, and converted. The scores wore 11—-5 at the interval. In the second term New Zealand were frequently penalised for off-side play. Eventually Mingay crossed, Wogan adding the extra points. From now on New Zealand assumed the mastery, the final scores being New Zealand 24, New South Wales 13.
THE LEAGUE CODE. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug 7 The second League test match, England v. New Zealand, was played at Lancaster Park to-day. Rain fell all the previous night and during the greater part of the' game, and had a bad effect on the attendance, which was in the vicinity of 6000. England won by 19 points to 3. Stone (2), Hilton, Parkin and Bacon scored for England, Gronow converting one and kicking a goal from a mark. Guiney* scored for New Zealand.
ROLLER V. INANGAHUA. WESTPORT, Aug 9. A representative Inangalma team journeyed to Westport on Saturday and were defeated by 9 points to nil. MARLBOROUGH’S SUCCESS. WELLINGTON, Aug 9. Playing at Wellington on Saturday, a representative Marlborough team defeated Wellington B team by 7 points to 6. WTN FOR BUSH UNION TEAM. MASTERTON, August 8. In a representative Rugby football mateh played yesterday the Bush Union team defeated Wairarapa by 3 points to nil.
