TAUSTKAIjIAN tfc N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION] N.Z. WINS. SYDNEY, August 4. The New Zealand Versus New South Wales second team was ah tho best an uninspiring contest. The local men registered two tries by Friend and Quinlivan, the latter’s being converted by Mingay, before the visitors scored. 'Pbc Blacks exentually broke the Now South Wales offensive and initiated a succession of passing movements among the three quarters, Wilson, Hassell and Baird crossing in quick succession. The last named converted Hassell’s try, making the scores: New Zealand 11, N.S.W. Bat the interval. N.S.W. opened the piny after re-start-ing throwing the ball about freely, and several times being almost over, O’Brien being twice obliged to force. Storey Hornnva nded respect throughout the game, several opponents generally being ready to smother his efforts to break through. At length, securing in the loose near half way, Storey punted down the field. Regaining the ball be dodged two opponents and running strongly scored a fine try, Hassell converted. Play afterwards was inclined toward raggedness, particularly in the defence. Badcley scored from the half-way, mainly through a misunderstanding by both teams standing in anticipation of the whistle. Carrol then scored twice in succession, Hassell converting the three. Right on time, the local men crossed twice, Mingay converting. The final scores were:—New Zealand 31, N.S.W. 18.
SOUTHERN DIVISION
The weakly mooting of the Southern Division was held on Wednesday evening, Mr A. H. Lawn presiding t . r the following delegates—Messrs A. J.c.rell, Gillooly, A. Cutbush, D. Dee, T. Toohey, D. Dowell, B. Dowell and E. Heenan (Secretary.) The outward correspondence was read and approved and inward correspondence read and received. Air Gilooly moved that the account for repairing jerseys be passed for payment.—Seconded by Mr Dee and carried. Referees reports were read and details noted. Air Dee moved that Hokitika Football Club business be left in the hands of the Secretary to deal with. Seconded by Air Lawn and carried. The Excelsior Club asked for their protest re Williams to be withdrawn. This question caused considerable discussion. Referee Downey reported ordering "!f E. Breeze, an Excelsior forward for tripping Irwin (Kiwi). Referee Downeys’ evidence was taken.. Air D. Dowell moved that E. Breeze be severely cautioned. Seconded by Mr T. Gillooly. Mr 1L- Dowell thought that no matter other than tlio questioning of rulings be submitted to the Grey Union. He moved that tlio sub-division be allowed to pronounce all defaulters and Greyniouth be asked not to interfere with sub-Division penalties. This motion was withdrawn. E. Breeze was then duly cautioned. A letter to be sent to E. Breeze asking him in future to attend the meeting personally. A. Cutbush was then warned for rough play, Air Downey explained this incident. ‘Air Cutbush apologised for supposed misconduct on the field.—Received. W. Inglis’ case was taken next. Inglis appeared in person. The chairman then read Referee Hill’s report in connection with Inglis being ordered off tho field. W. Inglis said he was almost on top of Woolhouse when Woolliouse played the ball, Inglis going on and knocking Woolhouse out. Inglis was asked if hr could avoid this, Inglis said that he could not possibly avoid this, Mr D. Dowell said he saw the whole incident and thought that Inglis could hardly avoid the trouble. Air B. Dowell (Diggers captain) upheld D. Dowell’s statement. Mr. D. Dee said that Inglis aite knocking out Woolhouse went awe smiling. Inglis said that whenever he got a bump he came up smiling. The chairman explained the whole matter of sportsmanship, and the playing of a hard game constituted good play.
Mr T. Gillooly moved that Inglis bo severely cautioned. Seconded by ACutbush and carried.
Both these penalties have to be sent to the West Coast Rugby Union for confirmation. Mr D. Dowell moved that the Referee’s actions in both cases be endorsed. Seconded by D. Dee and carried. Mr A. Dowell asked that if the captain appealed could he be penalised. This matter was clearly explained by members of the Referee’s Association.. Referees Delegates report. Excelsiors v. Kumara—Mr. D. Dowell. Diggers v. Kiwis—M. Houston. Kokatahi v. Ross—M. Mitchell. Mr A. Dowell moved referees report be confirmed. Seconded by Mr A. Cutbush and carried. Mr Dee moved that all teams competing be asked to bring their own football to the ground. Seconded by Mr A. Dowell and carried.
The chairman asked the delegates if they were satisfied with the ruling on Captain appealing. Most of the delegates approved of the referees’s decision. Mr A. Cutbush explained the little incidents in connection with ap-* pealing. Mr A. Dowell eaid that the* Diggers Football Club would entertain Marist Footballers on their arrival. Mr D. Dee asked the chairman to see the team’s delegates and delegates from junior clubs and school together with the Rugby Union, wait on the Council with a view to securing a second ground on Cass Square. The members spoke in connection with request, all members of Southern Division agreed that the junior clubs and school teams should h'e given an opportunity of increasing their knowledge of Rugby. Tho Executive were all agreed to act as deputation to the Borough Council on this very important matter. Mr Amos Dowell moved that that Mr
A. Dowell and T. Gillooly act as touch line judges for the Excelsior v. Kumara match and the touch line judges for the second match be J. Downey and -A. Cutbush. The meeting closed with usual vote of thanks to the chair.
