BRITISH FORCE ATTACKED.
(Recpivetj this day ’at 11.30 a.m.) L(}NDON, Aug 3. A War Office communique regarding Mesopotamia, states -a strong British reeonnoitering column proceeding south wards from HiHn, was attacked and / roughly handled by tribesmen on the 24th July, but succeeded in cutting their way. back to Hilla after suffering three hundred casualties ,and losing a field gun, twelve machine guns and other material and a large number of horses and mules. Disturbances in
lower Euphrates region continue. The
railway from Hilla to Baghdad was cut ) several times. The garrison at Diwnni was withdrawn to Ibagle, which the tribesmen unsuccessfully attacked o nthe 28th. There is no news of the garrison at Kufu, which is invested.
