LATE LOCALS.

The motor service between Hokitika and Otira, so ably run by Mr Sidney Clements is proving a great boon to travellers who wish to reach home the same evoning, instead of having to put up a night in Greymouth. Passengers by last night’s trip arrived in Hokitika at C. 5 o’clock, nearly half an hour before the train reached Greymouth, passengers from the Empire City doing the whole journey in 21 hours. The Hon Minister of Public Works ins written to Mr Seddon M.P., as folows:—“When 1 was on the West (.'oast lie Westland County Council requested that an early commencement be made with the expenditure of the item of £SOO on the Appropriations for Slippery Face Deviation on the Main South Road. A considerable amount of location work will have to be, undertaken by a thoroughly qualified officer and will occupy about three weeks. Tile i Resident Engineer, has been unable to spare an officer for the length of time, but arrangements have recently been made to furnish him with an,additional officer and it is hoped that his Assistant Engineer will be able to undertake the survey of' the Slippery Face Deviation at an early date.” This is so far satisfactory, but it is hoped the work will be expedited. The road at Slippery Face is now in a very dangerous condition, and it might slip away altogether at any time. Now that traffic by sea is dislocated, this would be very serious in the case of a Sudden emergency. It is a matter of the first importance to have the deviation, so long asked for, provided at the earliest moment
