Lord Bryce presided at the inaugural ceremony, prior to the nnv filing. Mr Ediliu Root came from America to make the presentation on heliajf of the United States. Many Lards, Commoners, and prominent Anglo-Ame-ricans were present. Mr Root sa>’d that in any great emergency It would he impossible for Britain and America to be on opposite sides.
Mr Lloyd George neepted the statue on behalf of the people of the Empire. Hp paid a tribute to Lincoln’s courage, patience, humanity and trust in the people. He was one of those greet figures who lost their nationality in death and thenceforth belonged to the whole of mankind. “Such men are needed in the world to-day. The torn, bleeding earth is calling to-d.av for the help of the America of Abraham Lincoln’s days,” added Mr Lloyd George.
