WESTLAND WAR MEMORIAL.
SELECTING A DESIGN. A meeting was licld at the County Chambers last night to consider the designs sent in for the local War -Memorial. There were present:—Messrs Perry (chair), Bruce, Stewart, Preston, McGregor, Thompson, Andrewes, Wild, Macfarlane and Evans. The 'lion, secretary reports that 173 names of fallen Westlanders had been collected, and there were probably more names to chine. Total £1,115 13s 4d. The above amount is banked to the credit of the Fund. In addition, there is an additional sum of about £230 promised and still to he contributed, making tli<jj total sum £1,345, or £155 short of the original amount set out to he raised.
It was resolved to publish the list of subscribers as soon as convenient, and accept further donations. A number of designs were submitted, embracing proposals received from England, Australia and New Zealand. Mr Thompson’s advice was taken with regard to the material proposed. Ultimately, two Australian designs were selected provisionally, to prices for alternative materials, and when the information is reecived, a final decision will l>e made without delay. It was resolved to arrange for the work to he advanced as rapidly as possible.
