PAYMENT OF INCOME TAX.
PROTEST AGAINST EXEMPTIONS WELLINGTON, July 19.
The following motion was passed by the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce to-day:—“That this •Chamber has noticed with regret and concern the recent decision of the Government to exempt from income tax the salaries of members of Parliament and certain public officers, and is of opinion that it is a dangerous precedent and unnecessary ; and this Chamber trusts that the decision will be repealed, and, that liability for ineoni etnx should be taken into consideration when fixing the amount of remuneration.” Tlie mover pointed out the grave precedent proposed to he set up by Parliament, in that it might he the thin end of the wedge towards exemption for the whole of the Civil Service. His proposal did not mean to infer that members were paid sufficient salary, but that the Chamber, as business men, were opposed to anyone being exempted from the payment of income tax.
