JOTTINGS FROM THE LOBBY
THE GAMINCrTBILL. (Our Parliamentary Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, This Day. 'The Gaming Bill is a drastic measure, intended evidently to suppress bookmakers. The business or occupation of a bookmaker is declared to b,e illegal. Every person carrying on this business commits an offence, and is liable on summary conviction, to a fine of £SOO or imprisonment for two years. Every person who makes a bet with a bookmaker commits an offence against this Act and is liable to a fine of £IOO or imprisonment, for one month. The issue of betting circulars or cards is sufficient evidence, unless the contrary is proved, that the person is carrying on business of a bookmaker. The Bill makes it clear that a hot between persons neither of whom is a bookina'ker, is not an offence, and Racing Clubs are given wider powers to eject bookmakers from racecourses.
