The time handicap stands for the Shamrock, as Nicholson’s jacket to prevent back windage from the mainmast was not used, the. committee, threatening remeastrnement. Owing to light' easterly airs, the start was postponed. It became known, after many contradictory reports were circulated that the Shamrock also suffered n mishap during the 'first race, which in the opinion of Skipper Burton, might have resulted in the Shamrock’s withdrawal, had site been compelled to crowd on extra sail, in order to finish the race the bowsprit iron had moved inward and the vessel was in danger of disablement. The bowsprit lias been repaired. The Resolute has been supplied with an nlumlnite gaff to take the place of the wooden one, and both vessels are ready for the next race. The officially corrected time allowance to the Resolute is now announced as six minutes fortv seconds.
LIPTON’S EMOTIONS. NEW YORK, July 17. It is now revealed that when the fog descended “ Shamrock IVY ” was leading tlio •“ Resolute,” but the captain lost his bearings and headed-, inshore, while the Resolute luckily headed senwards, gaining the lead. Viewing the race from his steamer, Lipton’s emotions fluctuated like a barometer, and when the accident occurred to the Resolute lie did not know whether to be glad or sorry. Ho said: “I would rather not accept victory duo to an accident or a fluke, and if they want it not to count I will agree with them.” JJpton is very disappointed at the weather and remarked that the Shamrock needed a steady, strong breeze. It is recalled that Upton's Shamrock 1., in the 1899 regatta, was. compelled to withdraw from the second race, owing to an accident similar to the Resolute’s.

Beating to windward the Resolute was footing it faster than the Shamrock’ At 2,15 the yachts were still heading for Long llsand on £h« starboard' tack. The Resolute increased her windward advantage on the third Tile ■ Shamrock trying to outfoot her sagged to leeward although forging ahead. At 2.30 the wind was freshening. A rolling sea troubled the Shamrock. At 2.35 the Shamrock was four hundred yards to leeward. At 3.2 tacking for the turn, the Resolute was nearly a mile ahead. At 3.15 the wind freshened to Six knots and the boats split tacks. At 3.50 both wen far out to sea, almost heading for th. mark on the port, the Resolute 40') Shamrock was gaining steadily. At 4.10 the mark was a mile to the weather, and the Shamrock 100 yards under the lee. The wind then dropped and the yachts tacking to wondwiird failed to fetch the mark. The wind hauled to the southward, letting the Resolute up, but the Shamrock was left astern, and almost becalpied a -mile away, when the Resolute turned to the mark. The Shamrock rounded 1723 yards bo. hind. At 5.15 the ghamroek was five miles astern and nearly becalmed, while the Resolute was going fairly fast under a new breeze from tlio south. At 5.25 the Resolute was five miles from the second mark. At 5.45, the Shamrock was two miles astern. The Shamrock failed five times to pass the first mark, owing to shifts and calms At 0.30 the Resolute was a. mile off the second mark and turned at 7.1 She broke out her big reaching jib top sail in an endeavour to finisli undei the time limit.
