At 1.6 p.m. both yachts were offshore on the starboard tack in a six knot breeze. Tin (Resolute was half a mile in tile lead, slightly to windward. After an hour find a half six miles had been covered. At 1.43 the Resolute was slowly Increasing her lead. The Shamrock came about to starboard and followed in her wake. At two Resolute was half a mile ahead. Ten miles out the wind veered to westward, when the yachts pointed for the turning mark. The son then became flat and the air dead. The Resolute handled her sails better than the Shamrock.

The Resolute was surprisingly bettor in the light air footing it faster, four -and a half minutes ahead of the Shamrock.

In the last half mile oil the inshore tack, off Long Branch, she heeled over in a rain squall, the American picking up tho first of every puff-of wind increased her lead. The Resolute held up better to the mark going faster on the port tack. T]ie ntlie accident happened to the gaff, which fell half down, and the Shamrock passed'her. The Shamrock covered the course in four hours twenty minutes.
