Owing to the inclement weather conditions last night the dance in aid of the Excelsior Football Club at Toker’s Hall was postponed. The dance will now be held on Monday 19th. July. All Saints Tennis Club’s ball ; n the Opera House last evening drew an excellent attendance in spite of the vei'y inclement night, the gathering proving a distinct success. Excellent music was provided by Messrs Lawn (piano) and Gibbons (piccolo) several ladies kindly playing extras. Mr H. Thompson had charge of the floor which was in excellent order. Tuesday’s Westport '‘Times” says: “This morning a writ was delivered to Mr Tbos Pi Williams, Manager, and publisher of the Westport “Times’ citing him to appear..at Christchurch Supremo Court on the 4th. August 1920, to answer alleged contempt if Court, by publication of articles advocating the abolition of compulsoiy military training. We are considering whether the pen is mightier than file sword.”
The following teachers have been selected by the New Zealand Educational Institute to act as representatives of the certificated teachers on the Appeal Hoards in connection with the grading of teachers:—-Auckland, Colin l>Munro; Taranaki, Taliescn Thomas; Wanganui, David W. Low; Hawke’s Hay, Janies Hislop; Wellington, Charles N. Haslam, 8.A,; Nelson, Frederick G. Gibbs, M.A.; Canterbury, Christopher T. Aschman; Otago, Herbert C. Jones; Southland, Henry P. Young, Mr T. E. Y .Seddon, M.P., has presented 200 young oak trees to the town of Grc%mouth, for the purpose of planting them as a war memorial to fallen soldiers. Preparations are now being made by the Borough engineer, (Mr O’Donnell) for the laying out of the proposed avenue, which will extend from Sawyer’s Creek Bridge to the Hospital. The trees will have attached a brass tablet bearing the name, rank, and place of deatli of the Greymouth soldiers who fell during the war. At present 140 names are on the official records ,and the Borough Engineer will be pleased of apy further names of fallen Greymouth soldiers.
The attention of retailers and the general public is drawn to thp fact (says the New Zealand I‘Times”) that no advance can be made in the prices of sugar or of jam made fiom sugar purchased at the. price current before the recent advance intimated by the Board of Control. Retailers are warned that an infraction will render the defaulter liable to penalties defined in section 32 of the Board of fradp Act. It lias come to the knowledge of the authorities that some retainers are charging 6d per 11). for sugar bought before the advance in price and any complaints made against grocers of charging the new rate for old supplies will lie immediately attended to. Only a small quantity of new sugar has yet been placed on the market.
The IpvercargiH correspondent of blie Otago Daily “Times” says that a report from Stewart Island states that Messrs Cecil Hazlett and Jules Tapper on returning from a cruise in the upper waters of Paterson’s Inlet, picked,-up a castaway on the rocks known as Faith Hope and Charity. The marooned sailor was Hans Nilsen, who has the contract of bringing the mails and stores to Ulva and Kaipipi. His launch, the Viking, developed engine trouble, and was thrown on to the rocks mentioned. Nilsen was in a very exhausted state when rescued, for during live days and nights he was oil the pocks lie bail neither food nor water. The mails and stores were lost.
