ARTHUR’S PASS DISPUTE,
QUESTIONS IN HOUSE. (By Telegraph.—Special to Qugrdian.) WELLINGTON, July I§. Several questions regarding the stop : page of work af the Bealey end of Arthur's Pass tunnel were asked in the House, Mr Seddon (Westland), asked That inquiry had been made into the dispute, and what prospect there was of an early resumption of operations? The Minister of Public Works (Hon. G. Contes) replied that lie-had teie. graphed to the men undertaking to put them 'on day wages in the meantime, and asking them to parry on until an officer had been sent from Wellington to inquire into the position/He hoped for a- ‘satisfactory settlement. Mr Holland (prey) Tend a statement from the men. Hon. J. G'. Coates said he was sorry the matter had been raised in the House, since a genera] discussion would n,ot assist settlement. All officer jn whom he had fujl 'confidence, was going to examine' the situation. If the Bealey men were doing the same work ns the Otira men, they would get the increase they asked for. If they were not, he must stagfi by his officers. He made every effort to dp the right thing.
