There was a mild sensation at a gathering of the Commercial Tp vellers’ Association when General Russell, in tire course of his address on national defence, digressed for a moment and advocated the release of the conscientious objectors from all further imprisonment. “ Yo.v may say that is asking an impossible thing, but my personal opin. ion,” he said, “ is that at the end of the war, the conscientious objectors should have been released.” Several voices: “ No, no! ” General Russell: “1 quite understand that you disassociate yoursplf front my views, and 1 only told you what 1 think about it myself. I promised to make my opinion public. It- have done so.”
CRESSWEL L RECOVER ING. WELLINGTON, July 8. The young man, William Cresswell, who was instrumental in exposing the evil doings of Mackay, ex-Mayor of Wanganui, and who was shot by the latter with the object of preventing the exposure, is now well on the roadrto 10eovery, his progress having been most satisfactory. It is reported (says the Times special correspondent) that additional information was secured by Cresswell consequent on his discoveries in connection with the first- ease, and though no information under this detail has been published, it is understood that certain people have shaken the dust of Manganui off their feet.
