Much interest is being displayed in the Ballarat bye-election to-morrow which is the result of the unseating of Major Kerby because of the irregularities after tlio result showed Kirby with one vote of a. majority. Only two of the candidates E. I. .1. Kerby (Nationalist), and D. C. McGrath (Labour), a. returned soldier, are considered seriously. Tlicro is a. third candidate running merely as a protest against the members’ salary “grab.”If Labour were to win, the Hughes party would be placed in a minority, but if the Farmers’ Party continued I to support Hughes in the House, as is expected, . the result of a Labour win should not mean a. crisis. MELBOURNE, July 10 ' Dr Gilruth’s answer to Justice Ewing’s findings in the Northern Territory enquiry, contends that Ewing’s report bristles with inaccuracies, while suppression and false suggestions are common. With reference to the Commissioner’s view.that Gilruth is an aide man and in a sphere for which Providence intended him, and very much about the average, Gilruth comments that unfortunately the Commission insufficiently divulges the confidence of the Almighty and fails to state the - sphere wherefore lie was intended. Gilruth asserts his official actions, while administrating' the Territory met with the approval of each and every Minister under wlrotn he served.
AUSTRALIAN COAL TROUBLE. MELBOURNE, July .9Tn the Federal House, Mr Laminowl moved tli e adjournment in order to discuss the unrest- in the coal industry. Considerable heckling followed. Opposition accused the Government of being afraid to stand to the motion. Mr Hughes, after referring to delays in the Arbitration Court, said be intended to establish a special tribunal to ’oil with the boOl dispute. The 'Tribunal would consist of an equal number of employees and employers.
