POLISH OPERATIONS

(Received this day at 8 n.m.) LONDON, *3 uly 8. Warsaw official.—Between the Dvina and Upper Beresina, the Poles retired in tlio face of superior numbers of the enemy who also crossed the Beresina in force, south-east of Borisea. A Polish counter-attack is developing favourably.
BOLSHEVIKS’ ADVANCE. LONDON, July 8.
Warsaw advices state that a long prepared Bolshevist offensive opened on Tuesday. The enemy attacked by the Dvina, Their cavalry have already cut off the railway line from Kieff to Kovel. Tlio Polish Defence Council have summoned the people to rally to tlio flag. Thousands of Polish volunteers are now flocking to the colours. POLAND RESDY FOR EVENTUALITIES. LONDON, July 8. Tlio Polish Minister in London, in an interview, stated that the Polisli posi tion was certainly a critical one, but obviously the inspired rumour that Poland had capitulated was entirely untrue. The “Bolsheviks outnumbered the Poles by four to one.” he said. “It is not surprising that we have been compelled to retreat, but is is not a rout. The enemy’s line of communications are defective. Therefore the Bolshevik pur- ! suit is unlikely to bo rapid. Poland has j peace terms prepared, and she will negotiate at tlio first appropriate opportunity. NORTH FRONT IN DANGER. LONDON, July 8. The “Morning Post’s” Warsaw correspondent reports that the Beds are treatening Minsk. They are using senii-savago Siberians and Chinese mercenaries. They have also a considerable number of tanks, and armoured cars. The northern front must be watched, for there is where there will be decisive development. Here the Reds are trying to drive the Poles into the Pinsk marshes. Polish recruits are now flocking to the army.
