HUGE EARNINGS AT SWANSEA.

Although the Welsh steel and tinplaters recently received a further 10 per cent increase on basic rates, they are now formulating claims for further additions. The Dockers’ Union section of the tinplate trade met at Swansea on •April 25th to decide upon applications for a further 75 per cent advance. The Welsh steel-workers are the aristocrats of labour in South Wales. The first hands, with their recent advances, now earn between £27 and £3O a week clear, and second hands from £lB to £2O. Tin plate workers average between £lO and £l4 a week, coal trimmers £lB a week, and unskilled boatmen £l2 to £ls a week. -Many yournl lads who only left school a few years ago aro getting £7 and £8 a week. There are eases of colliers where a father and four sons take home £4O and £SO every week. Three coal trimmers in one family average £45 a week between them. General unskilled laborers have uo difficulty in earning £5 and £6 for a full week’s work with a little overtime. It is nothing unusu.nl for a working man to give from £6OO to £9OO for a house at a sale.
