[PF.n FIIEBB ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT.] ASIATIC LABOUR TROUBLE. CHRISTCHURCH, July 2. There has been trouble over Asiatic labour being employed on the Lyttel-ton-Sumher Road. It appears that some Hindus, who last week completed a contract on railway construction works in North Auckland arranged with the Public Works Department to take up a separate contract on the Evans’ Pass Road, between Lyttelton and Sumner. They reached Christchurch on Tuesday, and, instead of calling at the local office of the Department, went straight on to the job and tho ganger placed them at work as labourers. The Departmental officers, it is explained, were not aware of the Hindus being on the scene till it was reported that the white workers had ceased work. A delegation from the men waited on the District Engineer this afternoon and had the facts placed before them. The Engineer said it was intended that thc Hindus should undertake a small contract on the road by themselves, and they would not come into contact with the whites. Subsequently, however, it was decided, on account of the feeling existing that the Hindus should not he engaged on the Evans’ Pass works under any arrangement.
