WESTMINSTER ABBEY. APPEAL FOR FUNDS. 'Reuter’s Telegram.) {Received this day at 12.25 p.m) iLONDON, June 25
The Dean of Westminster, in a letter to the press, appeals to the English speaking world to subscribe a quarter of a million, for the upkeep of Westjninstpi; Abbey, which, he says, is u danger of entering a phase of steady structural deterioration. The funds 6) tile ]jeau Chapter no longer suffice for thp upkeep. The King has contributed £I,OOO and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners £IO,OOO. Of the whole sum £IOO,OOO is required for immediate structural repairs and the remainder to constitute a fund to keep the Abbey In cpmpiete repair in future. The Dean points out that the space available in the Abbey for the commemoration of the honoured dead has become exceedingly limited and unless the removal of less important memorials from the Abbey to the cloisters is authorised, some other means of communication of the Empire’s illustrious dead must soon be obtained.
