WESTLAND ACCLIMATIZATION SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Council of the Westland Acclimatisation Society was held at the County Chambers last evening. Those present included Dr. Teichelmann, (President), in the chair, Messrs Jas King (lion secretary) ; Braddon, E. J. Lloyd, Shivas, P. R .Stewart A. B. King, Seale, A. B. Boyd, and Evans. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual balance, already published, was received and adopted. The retiring officers and Council were re-elected, and a vote of thanks accorded the Secretary. GENERAL BUSINESS. It was resolved to again ask the Tele, graph Department to have the telephone installed at R. Parkinson’s, Lake Kanieri. A sub-committee was appointed to adjust an extra payment to the curator. The slaughter and even poisoning of opossums in the district wa s reported, and it waß resolved to notify tli e police, and again urge an open season for taking opossums. The Department notified the opening of the shooting season from May to July, hut would not agree to native pigeons being shot. A notification was received that the. Government proposed importing rainbow trout from America to assist in reestablishing the fish in Now Zealand waters.
It was reported 200,000 ova were now being hatched at Lake Kanieri for the Grey Society, the ova having been supplied from North Canterbury; also that 50,000 fry were to be supplied to Buffer Society from ova locally obtained. Stripping was now in progress at Kokatahi and Lake Kanieri. . Mr Low of Wellington was appointed delegate to the annual conference of the Association of Acclimatisation Societies in August. The Prime Minister replied in respect to a. special grant of ova for Westland, stating the matter had been referred to the Internal Affairs Department. Cook and Son, Auckland, and others wrote appreciatively of the pictorial production “Beautiful Westland” and reports were received of ready sales in progress. The Chief Commissioner wrote reporting that the question of tho sawdust nuisance in Maliinapua stream, and tho erosion of the bank at Lake Kanieri were being attended to satisfaci torily.
Various recommendations were received regarding deer shooting in South Westland. One stalker urged the necessity of obtaining a report regarding the culling of the herds in the Haast, Clarke and Landsborougli regions. It was stated the Otago Society would cooperate. Consideration was deferred for the present. A large amount of routine business was dealt with and several accounts passed for payment, when the meeting concluded.
