DOMINION MUSEUM

NEW 'BUILDING REFERRED

WELLINGTON, June 23.

Addressing a meeting of the Board of Science and Art to-day, the Hon G. J. Anderson, Minister of Internal Affairs, said there was little prospect of the Dominion Museum being housed in a suitable permanent building for some time. The demands on the Government were so great that it really had very little money now for anything else than purely utilitarian purposes such as opening up the country, and erecting homes for the people. This meant that the erection of now buildings for the Dominion Museum must be postponed. It was true that the Government had voted a substantial sum for a museum in the north, hut that was only by way of subsidy. The museum was costing £3OOO a year. He suggested that if a board of trustees were created governing the museum, it was more than likely that donations would be secured from outside. The Minister announced that the Government had decided that Dr Alan Thomson should he the New Zealand delegate to the Pan-Pacific Scientific Congress to be held at Honolulu. Cabinet did not consider it necessary to extend his visit further for the present, as there was no immediate prospect of the Dominion Museum being built.
