CHINESE RAID CHARGES TIMARU, June 17.
Two men, Kenneth Newlnnds and Anthony Stowley, who were acquitted by the Supreme Court jury of taking part in the raids on Chinese fruit shops in April, were convicted by tho Magistrate on the other charges connected with the raids, and each were fined - 5 and costa.
ILLTCIT BEER- SELLING. TIMARU, June 17
At the Magistrate’s Collirt to-day, Sidney Wilkes, billiard room keeper at "Pareora, was convicted and fine! £SO for illicit sales of beer. • FIRE ON COASTAL STEAMER. TIMARU, June 17. The small steamer Manaroa of 300, tons gross, left Dunedin for Lyttelton and Westport at 6 p.m. o’n Wednesday, with a full cargo of general morchandi.se. At 6.30 this morning she was found to have a fire in the midship hold. The crew fought the fire all day and, failing to master it, Captain Johnston made for Timaru as the nearest port. He ar-
rived there at 7 p.m., the fire brigade were sent for to assist. A largo quantity of water was poured into the hold, but the fire was still burning at 11 p.m. This was the Manaroa’s first trip after refitting; and also Captain Johnston’s first trip in her.
. , POSTAL APPOINTMENT. WELLINGTON, June 17. George Trackamara, who has been acting as Chief Inspector of Post Offices, has been appointed assistant Secretary of tbe Post and Telegraph Department, in succession to Mr G. B. Dali, retired.
