IRISH SETTLEMENT QUESTION
f AUSTRALIAN cfc N.Z. CAKI.E ASSOCIATION j
A REUTEIi.]
(Received this day at 8.40 a.m.) LONDON, May 24. ' A deputation of responsible, people interested in the settlement of the Irish problem, interviewed the Acting-, Chief Secretary, Hon. Walter Long, at the House of Commons, and expressed their belief in the Government’s good intentions, hut asked for generous amendment's of the Home Rule Bill, T>y which fundamental unity would be more clearly asserted. The deputation was of the opinion that the Irish Parlia- J ment should include bi-cameral Logis- 1 laturcs for I'ctb divisions of Ireland, of which the Upper Houses of each would constitute the Council of Ireland, to , be invested wth wider unreserved 1 powers than at present provided. It was suggested that the amount of the Irish contribution to the Imperial Government should be left to the Irish legislatures, as in the Dominions. Tlie deputation suggested other alterations, by which the status of Ireland would more closely resemble the Dominions.
j Hon. W. Long, replying, showed the Government’s task had been rendered more difficult through the Tack of criticism, owing to the absenting Nationalists and the withdrawal of the la. bourites from the House of Commons.' He also referred to the increase of crime in Ireland. Hon. Long said
Englishmen little wish to regard concessions to Irish opinion as yielding to the forces of outrage. He undertook to submit the deputation’s proposals to the Cabinet.
